Canyons School District reported that 28 of its elementary and middle schools have reached top positions in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings. Sunrise Elementary maintained its number one position on the list of Best Elementary Schools in Utah, followed by Peruvian Park at number four.
In addition to the top elementary schools, 20 other elementary schools in the district were listed within the top 40 percent of Utah's schools. Six CSD middle schools received recognition, including three that scored within the top five. Albion ranked third, Butler ranked fourth, and Draper Park ranked fifth.
The K-8 rankings follow previous recognition by U.S. News, which named four traditional high schools in the district as having Best in Utah status. The methodology used by U.S. News to determine these rankings is based on state test scores regarding proficiency in math and reading. The evaluation weights six factors: College Readiness at 30 percent, State Assessment Proficiency at 20 percent, State Assessment Proficiency at 20 percent, Underserved Student Performance at 10 percent, College Curriculum Breadth at 10 percent, and Graduation Rate at 10 percent.
Canyons School District Superintendent Dr. McKay Robinson stated that the high number of recognized schools is a testament to the district's commitment to academic excellence and student success. Robinson noted that being honored across all grade levels demonstrates the strength built for students from kindergarten through graduation. The Superintendent also credited the board, educators, leaders, parents, and students for their dedication.
The rankings are significant given that there are nearly 600 elementary schools and 200 middle and junior high schools across Utah.
The U.S. News methodology notes that the highest-ranked schools are high-achieving and successful at educating all of their students.
