Deer Valley Resort has unveiled 100 new ski runs as part of its Expanded Excellence initiative, which aims to honor the mining history of Park City. The latest phase of the resort's transformation includes doubling its skiable terrain and introducing 10 new lifts for the current season.
According to Steve Graff, Deer Valley Resort Vice President of Mountain Operations, the names for the new terrain were chosen with careful intention to celebrate the resort's past. Working alongside Park City historian Michael O’Malley, the resort gathered inspiration from the local mining era to name the new runs.
Many of the 100 new runs are named after mining claims within the Park City region. For example, the run Lone Tree is named after a 50-foot pine tree found on the trail, while Pay Rock honors a prominent outcropping. The black diamond run Glencoe ends in Glencoe Canyon.
Other trails feature more complex histories. The Keetley Express honors mining engineer Jack Keetley and the former town of Keetley, which is now located beneath the Jordanelle Reservoir. Trails accessible from this lift include Water Loo, Lake Shore, and Lady of the Lake.
The Green Monster run, noted as one of the longest runs in North America, takes its name from a Wasatch County mine containing malachite. The Yaup run refers to the sounds of frustration regarding unproductive mining claims, while Crown Prince honors the Crown family of Chicago.
The expansion also pays tribute to individuals in the mining community. The Revelator Express is named for miner John the Revelatory, and the Deep Enuf trail honors late mining engineer Keith Droste. An off-piste tree run nearby is named Well Timbered to commemorate Droste's influence on the industry.
Some new runs are named after notable individuals or landmarks outside of mining claims. These include Papa Joe, honoring Joseph Resnick; To the Max, for Max Kreig; and Hill Yeah, a reference to the Hill Air Force Base call sign. The Pinyon Express lift provides access to a new beginner area featuring runs such as Dream, June Bug, Humbug, Straddlebug, and Northern Light.
As part of the initiative, Deer Valley plans to have up to 202 total runs open this season. To celebrate these milestones, the resort is offering Record Rates for Record Runs, where discounted half-day lift tickets are available on days when new run records are set.
Additionally, Season Pass and Ikon Pass holders can participate in a Turkey Chili promotion at the Deer Valley East Village Lodge, with prices tied to the number of open ski runs.
