Stage 2 Fire Restrictions for Manti-La Sal National Forest Friday, July 17, 2026Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are now in effect for the entire Manti-La Sal National Forest starting Friday, July 17, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. through October 31, 2026 unless rescinded. This applies to the Ferron, Price, Sanpete, Moab and Monticello Ranger Districts located within Emery, Carbon, Sevier, Utah, Sanpete, Grand, and San Juan Counties in Utah, as well as Mesa and Montrose Counties in Colorado. Note: Areas on the Monticello Ranger District are gradually reopening, but some portions remain closed for public safety due to the Babylon wildfire. As areas are evaluated and deemed safe, they will reopen under these Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. Before visiting, please check the Alerts page for the most current information. The Monticello Ranger District closure order and map are posted there and updated regularly so you can verify which areas are open and which remain closed.

UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICEMANTI-LA SAL NATIONAL FORESTSTAGE 2 FIRE RESTRICTIONSPROHIBITIONSPursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a), the following are prohibited on the National Forest System (NFS) lands in the Manti-La Sal National Forest, described below and shown on the attached map incorporated into this Order as Appendix A, hereinafter referred to as the “Described Area”:
Igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire (including fires or grills fueled by charcoal or briquettes) (36 CFR § 261.52(a)), except if it is: A device (stove, grill, or firepit) solely fueled by liquid or gas that can be turned on and off, used in an area barren or cleared of all flammable materials within 10 feet of the device. (36 CFR § 261.52(a))Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building. (36 CFR § 261.52(d))Operating a chainsaw or other equipment powered by an internal combustion engine for felling, bucking, skidding, processing, road building and woodcutting. (36 C.F.R. § 261.52(g))Welding, grinding, or operating an acetylene or other torch with open flame. (36 CFR § 261.52(h))Possessing or using a motor vehicle (including generators) off designated National Forest System roads, motorized trails, or established parking areas, except when parking in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle. (36 CFR § 261.56)
The following are always prohibited on National Forest Land, regardless of this order:Possessing or using an exploding target or any kind of firework or other pyrotechnic device. (36 CFR § 261.5(h))Blasting of any type or use of any type of explosive. (36 C.F.R. § 261.52(b)Firing any tracer bullet or incendiary ammunition. (36 CFR § 261.5(b))Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a spark arresting device that is properly installed, maintained, and in effective working order in accordance with USDA Forest Service Standard 5100-1. (36 CFR 261.5(j))EXEMPTIONSPursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:Persons, entities, or organizations—both internal and external—who are authorized to operate on Manti-La Sal National Forest lands under Project Activity Levels (PAL) are exempt from public fire restrictions. Instead, they must follow the specific rules and regulations outlined in the PAL fire restrictions as a condition of their exemption.Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting service in the performance of an official duty.DESCRIBED AREAAll National Forest System Lands located within the designated boundaries of the Manti-La Sal National Forest: Sanpete, Ferron, Price, Monticello, and Moab Ranger Districts as shown on the attached map.PURPOSEThe purpose of this Order is to protect public health and safety, as well as National Forest System lands, resources, and facilities, by reducing the risk of human-caused wildfires during the current period of high fire danger and severe fire weather conditions.IMPLEMENTATIONThis Order shall be in effect from July 17, 2026, at 0001 through Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 2359, unless rescinded.A map identifying the Described Area is incorporated into this Order as Appendix A. Chapter II, Parts 200-299. If there are terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 C.F.R.
