As students, faculty and staff return to the University of Utah for a new academic year, the Department of Public Safety is reminding the campus community of the resources, tools and everyday habits that help keep everyone safe.

“Your safety is always our top priority,” said Chief Safety Officer Keith Squires. “Whether this is your first year on campus or you’re returning for graduate school, we want you to know what resources are available and how to respond if you need help.”

Know what to do in an emergency

This year, the University has adopted the Standard Response Protocol, a set of five clear actions paired with specific campus alerts: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter. The goal is to make emergency messaging easier to understand so community members know exactly what is happening and what action to take.

Be a good neighbor on game days and beyond

Football season brings large crowds, high energy and many visitors to campus. Public Safety reminds fans to leave alcohol and vaping products at home, keep cheering positive and report anything that does not look right. If you see concerning activity in or around the stadium, text FANUP to 69050.

Being part of the campus community also means being a good neighbor. Students and visitors are encouraged to keep noise levels and social gatherings reasonable, especially late at night.

Practice pedestrian, bike and scooter safety

Whether walking to class, taking TRAX, riding a bike or using a scooter, small habits can make a big difference.

Use marked crosswalks, stay off your phone while crossing and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road. Bike and scooter users should remember that the campus speed limit is 10 mph and pedestrians always have the right of way.

Help is available across campus

Emergency phones are located throughout campus and connect directly to the dispatch center with the push of a button. Community members can also request a Security Escort if they feel unsafe and would like someone to walk with them to a car, residence hall, office or other campus building.

Stay connected

The Department of Public Safety is available 24/7. In an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency help, call 801-585-2677. The SafeU and Utah 360 apps can also be used to access safety resources.

Welcome back, be smart, be safe and go Utes.
