A high wind warning is in effect for the Southern Mountains, including Brian Head and Alton, until 6 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service Salt Lake City reports that south winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 80 mph are expected.
In the Southern Mountains, wind gusts between 70 and 82 mph have already been observed in the Pine Valleys and near Brian Head. The strongest gusts are anticipated over the Pine Valley Mountains, near Brian Head, and near Boulder Summit. Officials warned that strong winds combined with saturated soils could make it easier for trees to be downed. Backcountry users in high elevations are advised to exercise high caution near trees.
A high wind warning also remains in effect for western Millard and Juab Counties in Southwest Utah. This area includes Little Sahara, Milford, Delta, Beaver, and Cedar City. In these locations, south winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected. Wind gusts of approximately 60 mph have already been observed near Cedar City.
The high winds may move loose debris, damage property, and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles and vehicles towing trailers. People are urged to secure loose objects that could be blown around or damaged by the wind.
The National Weather Service Las Vegas has also issued warnings for the Colorado River Valley and Lincoln County. In the Colorado River Valley, including Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, Lake Havasu, Needles, Laughlin, and Bullhead City, south winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts of 60 to 70 mph are expected. In Lincoln County, south winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected. These warnings are in effect until 8 p.m. this evening. Damaging winds in these areas may blow down trees and power lines and could cause widespread power outages. Dangerous boating conditions are expected for all watercraft on area lakes.
