In an Instagram update posted July 8, meteorologist Matthew Johnson noted growing confidence that a monsoonal flow will persist for more than seven days at varying moisture levels. Current models suggest subtropical moisture is expected to be present in the area from July 14 through July 23.

The incoming weather pattern is expected to impact the state in stages. According to Johnson, rain chances are projected to begin in southwest and southern Utah before spreading northward as deeper moisture becomes trapped within the high-pressure system. He described the potential setup as a "double-edged sword," noting that while it could aid fire suppression, it simultaneously increases the potential for flash flooding in southern Utah.

The North American Monsoon system is driven by an upper-level high pressure area, known as a monsoon ridge, which facilitates a clockwise atmospheric flow. When this center shifts far enough north, it allows air moistened by the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California to move into the Southwest.
