Utah State Parks will host Military Appreciation Day on Aug. 9, offering free day-use entrance for active military, veterans, and their families at all state parks. The celebration follows a state-funded pilot program for veteran park passes that reached full capacity earlier this summer.
Military Recognition and Access
The annual celebration aims to recognize service members across the state. Scott Strong, the director of the Utah Division of State Parks, said the day expresses gratitude for the dedication and service of current and former military members, noting their service is crucial to preserving national freedoms and security.
Access and Restrictions
While most parks will offer free entry, standard fees will still apply at This Is The Place Heritage Park. The Utah Division of State Parks noted that the celebration is part of its broader mission to support the veteran and military community through outdoor recreation.
Veteran Pilot Program Results
The upcoming celebration follows the conclusion of the Veterans Adventure Pass pilot program. Created and funded by the Utah State Legislature through S.B. 108, the initiative provided 1,600 special annual state park passes to qualifying Utah veterans on a first-come, first-served basis.
Pilot Program Eligibility
The pilot program was designed to provide day-use access to Utah's natural landscapes for veterans who hold an Interagency Military-Lifetime Pass for national parks and are Utah residents. The program's validity was set from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025.
Disability Honor Pass
In addition to the pilot program, the division offers a Veterans With Disabilities Honor Pass. This pass provides day-use admittance for qualifying veterans and up to seven guests in the same private vehicle.
Honor Pass Requirements
To qualify for the Honor Pass, veterans must be Utah residents, honorably discharged, and provide documentation of a service-related disability issued by the U.S. Veterans Benefits Administration. The division noted that the Honor Pass is currently undergoing updates for 2026, though those with 2025 passes may continue to use them until updates are finalized.
Leadership Oversight
The Utah Division of State Parks leadership team, including Director Scott Strong and Deputy Directors Chris Haramoto and Devan Chavez, continues to oversee these initiatives to increase park access and remove barriers for visitors.
