The construction project for Salt Creek Elementary School in Tremonton officially received approval following the Box Elder School Board meeting on October 14. The new school is projected to open for the 2028-29 school year if the 18-month construction process remains on schedule.
The motion to approve the Salt Creek Elementary construction was moved by Bryan Smith and seconded by Stephanie DeFilippis, passing with a unanimous vote. The total budget for the project is $35,089,443.00, a figure that is approximately $3 million under the initial budget. During the discussion, it was noted that the majority of the bids for the project were awarded to local companies.
During the same meeting, the board also approved a construction project for Bear River High School presented by Business Administrator Neil Stevens. This project includes relocating the softball field and adding more parking lots. Tarkett Sports, a state contracted company, is scheduled to design and install the new softball field, which will be moved south by the Natatorium to allow for year-round use and easier access to athlete lockers.
The approved parking improvements will involve installing new spots in the large grass field located behind the football field and baseball diamond. These additions are intended to increase student safety and alleviate congestion during events by providing new areas for bus drop-offs and pick-ups. While Board Member Karen Cronin opposed the parking project, arguing that space to the north should be used to save money, the agenda item passed following a motion by Julie Taylor and a second by Wade Hyde.
Construction for the Salt Creek Elementary project is ideally expected to begin later this month.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 11, starting at 6:30 p.m.
