The Timpanogolas Arts Foundation (TAF) recently brought a new world to the stage with its production of The Fantasticks. Described as a blend of Romeo and Juliet, Into the Woods, and Cabaret, the show followed the story of Matt and Luisa, two lovers whose relationship is influenced by their parents' meddling.
The production was noted for subverting expectations in its second act, prompting audience reflection on life and love.
Will Gardner led the cast as El Gallo, a mysterious and morally ambiguous character. Gardner's performance was highlighted by his charisma and emotional depth, particularly during a September-themed monologue and the opening number, Try to Remember.
Brynn Hartley performed as Luisa, a character whose arc involves discovering the true meaning of caring for others. She was joined by Jensen Bean, playing Matt, a college student. The two performers demonstrated a unique chemistry that supported much of the production.
The supporting cast included Scott Mason as Hucklebee, Wayne Keller III as Bellomy, Justin Anderson as Henry, Eliza Stevenson as Mortimer, and Addilynn Bowler as the Mute.
The production's technical elements included scenic and lighting design by Caleb Wallengren. Using an intentionally minimal set with incandescent lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling, the design transitioned the stage from a warm atmosphere in the first act to a barren desert feel in the second.
Live music accompanied the show with orchestrations featuring Kimberly Harolds on piano and Kari Rundlett on the harp. The performance featured the score by Harvey Schmidt.
The production of The Fantasticks offered a departure from typical musical theater by avoiding flashy numbers in favor of themes regarding the moments taken for granted and the choice to embrace love. While this production has concluded, Timpanogos Arts Foundation has more shows planned for the 2026 season.
