About
Judge Jay T. Winward was appointed to the Fifth District Court in December 2022 by Governor Spencer J. Cox and serves Beaver, Iron, and Washington Counties in Utah. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Utah, attended law school at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School, and has practiced law in Southern Utah since 2007, including as a partner at Winward Law and as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office. Winward also teaches Business Law as an adjunct professor at Utah Tech University and has provided pro bono services and served on the board of the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.

Judge John Walton has denied a request from prosecutors to remove the judge presiding over the rape case involving former BYU football player Parker Kingston. The ruling stated that prosecutors did not provide sufficient grounds for disqualifying Judge Jay Winward.
