The Orem Library has established the Makerspace as a creative hub for the community to access equipment and software necessary for bringing STEAM skills to life. Functioning as an open lab, the space encourages patrons to master new skills at their own pace through activities such as 3D printing prototypes, digitizing vintage media, and recording podcasts.
Available equipment for checkout
The Makerspace offers a wide range of equipment available for checkout, including video tools like GoPro cameras, DJI drones, and various lighting kits. Audio enthusiasts can access MIDI keyboards, microphones such as the Logitech Blue Yeti, and podcasting kits. Photography resources include DSLR cameras from Canon and Nikon, along with tripods and lightboxes.
Textile tools and digitizing services
Beyond media production, the library provides textile tools including sewing machine and knitting loom kits. Digitizing services are also available through various kits designed to convert video cassettes, 8mm film, audio cassettes, and physical photos into digital formats. Other available items include Cricut craft cutters, telescopes, microscopes, and much more.
In-house technology and workstations
For in-house use, the Makerspace features 3D printers, iMacs equipped with Adobe Creative Cloud, GarageBand, and Logic Pro X, and specialized stations for audio and video digitization. The facility also includes a Luminat Light Table, sewing and embroidery machines, and heat press equipment.
Private recording studio access
A dedicated Makerspace Studio is located next to the main space, providing an independent recording area where patrons can record audio and video using their own devices or available library equipment.
Usage policies and operating hours
While the Makerspace is open to all, equipment checkout is restricted to adult Orem Library cardholders due to the high cost of items. The Makerspace Studio requires a reservation at least 24 hours in advance. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 9:00pm and Saturday from 9:00am to 6:00pm, but is closed on Sundays, holidays, and during library closures.
