Governor Spencer J. Rex Cox has named Katherine Potter to serve as the commissioner of the Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement (CCE). The appointment, effective July 1, 2026, comes after Potter served as the department’s deputy commissioner for the last six years.

Gov. Cox stated that Potter has a career dedicated to helping cultural, civic, and nonprofit institutions execute ideas effectively. He noted that she understands the work of the CCE and its partners, providing necessary leadership as Utah enters the America250 era.
Previous leadership roles at CCE
During her tenure as deputy commissioner, Potter assisted in leading nine divisions within the CCE. These include the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, Utah STEM Action Center, Utah State Library Division, Utah Historical Society, Utah Division of Multicultural Affairs, Utah Division of Indian Affairs, Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission, Utah State Historic Preservation Office, and UServeUtah.
Professional responsibilities and duties
Her responsibilities involved strategic planning, budget and resource management, performance metrics, legislative coordination, and providing leadership support across the department.
Extensive management and consulting experience
Potter brings over 25 years of experience in management and consulting roles within government, education, nonprofit, and cultural organizations. Prior to her time at CCE, she worked as a consultant for nonprofits and served as the associate director of admission at Rowland Hall.
Contributions to the Eccles Theater
Her professional background also includes significant contributions to the development, marketing, fundraising, and 2016 opening of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater. Earlier in her career, she held management and leadership positions with arts organizations located in Chicago and New York City.
Academic background and board service
Potter has previously served on the University of Utah College of Fine Arts Advisory Board and the Salt Lake City Arts Council Board. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and an MBA from the Yale School of Management.
In her response to the appointment, Potter expressed honor in continuing her service to CCE and stated her gratitude for working with the staff and partners who support Utah's people and places.
