George Washington Academy conducted a board retreat focused on the theme of governing for greatness, according to minutes from a meeting held on July 16, 2026. The session, which was approved by the Board of Directors on August 27, 2026, centered on the APPLE acronym to guide future governance and school success.
During the retreat, the board discussed the importance of asking great questions to hold members accountable and ensure the school's mission is being met. The board also addressed the need to plan strategically by monitoring progress and maintaining a focus on long-term vision rather than daily operations.
Discussions included the responsibility of the board to protect the school's Charter Agreement to ensure long-term sustainability. Members were encouraged to review the charter, specifically exhibit A, to ensure all departments are aligned. Additionally, the board emphasized leading through governance by using policy rather than emotion to drive decisions.
The retreat also highlighted the necessity of evaluating student success by using data and reports from the administration to ensure decisions move the school toward academic success.
To prepare for future meetings, board members were asked to review specific sections of the book Governing for Greatness by Brian L. Carpenter. Members will also receive documentation to select committee involvements and information regarding the 26/27 school year.
The meeting was closed with a goal to build strong governance through preparation and a focus on the betterment of the school. Attendees included board members Shannon Greer, David Stillman, Casey Unrein, Sharna Rowe, Ericka Ivie, Laura Pressley, Laura Snelson, Miguel Munoz, Brady Pearce, and Blake Clark, along with Debbie Kauvaka, Steve Erickson, and Sadie Carter.
