Brigham Young University's University Communications department relies on a seasoned staff to manage campus-wide messaging, including Aaron Sorenson, who oversees internal communications and award-winning newsletters like Y News and the Student Email.
Internal Communications Leadership
Aaron Sorenson serves as the primary point of contact for BYU campus announcements and events. Since joining the University Communications staff in 2019, he has been responsible for publishing two award-winning newsletters: Y News and the Student Email.
Before his current role at the university, Sorenson spent nearly five years working in communications at Nike's world headquarters located in Beaverton, Oregon. His professional background also includes a tenure within BYU's Athletic Communications department, where he focused on media relations for the football and gymnastics teams.
Professional Background and Education
Sorenson's connection to BYU extends back to his time as a student, during which he completed a one-year internship in the same athletic communications office where he later worked professionally. He earned his bachelor's degree in communications from BYU in 2013.
A Utah native, Sorenson also served a mission in Kennewick, Washington, from 2006 to 2008. Beyond his professional and academic background, he is the father of three children.
Media Relations and Spokesperson Roles
Todd Hollingshead holds a central role in BYU's external media strategy, focusing on writing feature stories and pitching them to both national and local news outlets. He also serves as a university spokesperson and manages one of the official BYU social media accounts.
In addition to his communications duties, Hollingshead acts as the designated contact for journalists seeking data, information requests, or expert sources from the university's faculty.
Journalism Experience and Teaching
Hollingshead has been a part of the University Communications team since 2007. His career in news media includes experience as a reporter for both The Daily Herald and The Salt Lake Tribune before transitioning to his roles at BYU.
He holds a bachelor's degree in communications, which he earned from BYU in 2004, and later obtained a master's degree in communications in 2012. In addition to his administrative and media duties, Hollingshead teaches an undergraduate public relations class within the university's Communications Department.
Campus Engagement
Hollingshead's long tenure at the university has allowed him to witness significant eras of BYU history, including the Jimmer era, in person. He expressed a professional passion for working with colleagues across various departments and engaging with the student body through his teaching.
