The Bonneville Fire, a 566-acre blaze that began on June 20, reached full containment on July 1. The fire previously threatened the University of Utah Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Institute and resulted in the evacuation of events at both Red Butte Garden and the Natural History Museum of Utah.
University of Utah operations, including classes and U of U Health, have continued as normal with no university facilities threatened. While fire management activities have had minimal impact on campus, the public is advised to stay clear of emergency vehicles and personnel.
Regarding local recreation, the Department of Public Lands reopened trails in the area as of July 1. However, officials requested that the public avoid the burn zone and Mt. Van Cott Ridge trails until further notice to allow firefighters space for suppression and rehabilitation work. Officials warned that burned landscapes can present hazards such as unstable soil, rolling rocks, and weakened trail infrastructure.
In terms of safety regulations, the University follows Salt Lake City fireworks restrictions, which included a ban on personal fireworks through July 5. A professionally managed fireworks display at Rice-Eccles Stadium for Monster Jam was authorized following review by fire prevention authorities and included specific safety requirements and monitoring plans.
Post-fire risks include the potential for mudslides and debris flows. Because burned soils may be less able to absorb water, even small summer thunderstorms can move mud, rocks, and vegetation downhill. An initial assessment indicated that neighborhoods and campus facilities west of the burn area could face a 20-40% likelihood of debris flow during storms with specific rainfall intensity.
The University has prepared sandbags for deployment in anticipation of potential storm debris impacting four drainage areas on campus.
The cause of the Bonneville Fire is currently under investigation and was identified as human-caused. Officials noted that there is no indication the fire has affected the Salt Lake City drinking water supply used by the University of Utah.
