University of Utah Health, the State of May, and the Point of the Mountain State Land Authority have officially signed a Purchase and Sale Agreement for approximately 46 acres of land within The Point innovation community. This agreement establishes University of Utah Health as the primary healthcare provider for the 600-acre master-planned development.
Future health campus plans
The acquisition provides a foundation for a potential future health campus that could include inpatient and outpatient services, intended to serve residents in Salt Lake and Utah Counties.
Expanding access to clinical care
The land purchase is designed to bring specialized clinical care closer to rapidly growing areas such as Draper, Lehi, Saratoga Springs, and surrounding communities including Bluffdale, South Jordan, Sandy, Riverton, Herriman, American Fork, Highland/Alpine, Eagle Mountain, and others.
University leadership on regional growth
University of Utah President Taylor Randall stated that the acquisition fulfills a critical pillar of the university's regional strategy, noting that as Utah grows, the university must grow with it. Bob Carter, MD, PhD, CEO of University of Utah Health, said the purchase is an exciting milestone because it provides the footprint necessary to bring nationally ranked care closer to where people live and work.
Maintaining existing healthcare commitments
Dr. Carter also noted that this project does not change existing commitments to the University of Utah Eccles Health Campus and Eccles Hospital in West Valley or the Huntsman Cancer Institute Comprehensive Care Center in Vineyard, describing these as complementary efforts.
Role of State Land Authority
The Point of the Mountain State Land Authority was formed by the Utah State Legislature in 2018 to oversee the transformation of state-owned property near the Salt Lake-Utah County line.
State and local official praise
Utah Governor Spencer Cox praised the partnership as an example of proactive planning that integrates healthcare into the vision for the new community. The Point Co-Chair Lowry Snow expressed looking forward to continued strategic collaboration as the development takes shape.
While design and structural details remain in early conceptual phases, the site is expected to eventually employ approximately 2,500 clinical and non-clinical staff members. University of Utah Health is currently in the early planning stages of this multi-year process.
