A coordinated air and ground rescue operation recovered a dehydrated hiker on Monday, July 6, 2026, after he became separated from his group while visiting the Wave/Wire Pass area in southern Utah. The man was found nonverbal and drifting in and out of consciousness near the confluence of Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) reported that dispatch received a call regarding an overdue hiker at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday. The incident began earlier that morning when a group of hikers traveled to The Wave, a highly sought-after area within the Coyote Buttes North permit system managed by the Bureau of Land Management. While navigating the terrain, the group became separated from one member of their party.
Coordinated Search Efforts
According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the group initially returned to the trailhead hoping the missing individual had arrived safely on his own. When they realized he was still missing, they contacted KCSO dispatch for assistance. In response, KCSO deputies and Bureau of Land Management Rangers met with the group at the Wire Pass Trailhead to gather essential information, which led to the activation of Kane County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (KCSAR).
Locating the Hiker
The rescue effort utilized both aerial and ground-based assets throughout the evening and into the night. While Intermountain Life Flight was initially requested to assist with an aerial search, the task was later assumed by a Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) Aero Bureau helicopter based in St. George. Simultaneously, KCSAR personnel conducted a ground search through the rugged terrain.
Medical Emergency Response
Ground teams successfully located tracks belonging to the missing hiker, which led them to the edge of the Wire Pass slot canyon. Following these leads, the DPS helicopter conducted a search through Buckskin Gulch. The flight crew eventually spotted the man lying on slickrock approximately halfway between the confluence of the Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch trailheads.
Treatment and Safety Warnings
Upon locating the hiker, the DPS flight crew found him in a critical state, being nonveral and drifting in and out of consciousness. The man was loaded into the helicopter and flown to the Wire Pass Trailhead, where an ambulance was waiting. Members of the Big Water Fire Department provided emergency medical care at the trailhead before Intermountain Life Flight transported the patient to a hospital.

The hiker was treated for dehydration and other injuries at the hospital.
