Suppression Tactics and Strategies
Firefighters are currently focused on completing handlines within Black Canyon and other areas located to the north of the fire. This direct suppression tactic is designed to keep the fire as close to its existing footprint as possible. In addition to handline construction, crews are working to strengthen control features in several locations to prevent further spread.
Suppression efforts are also leveraging natural features to slow the fire's progress. Crews are utilizing roads, rocky areas, and sections with minimal vegetation as part of the fireline to reduce the amount of manual line construction required by firefighters.
Contingency Line Construction
In an effort to prepare for rapid changes in fire behavior, crews are establishing primary, alternate, and contingency lines. Work on the Skyline Road contingency line was completed recently, and crews are performing similar work along Millers Flat Road.
These contingency lines are created by trimming lower tree branches and removing ladder fuels, which are materials that can allow a fire to climb from the ground into the tree canopy. These measures provide essential options for firefighters if the primary control line fails to hold or if fire behavior shifts unexpectedly.
Resource Allocation
The total resource commitment to the Black Canyon Fire includes 5 aircraft, 20 engines, 15 crews, 3 dozers, and 556 personnel. Aircraft continue to provide support for firefighting operations as weather conditions and resource availability permit.
Weather Impacts
Weather conditions remain a significant factor in the fire's behavior. While scattered showers occurred in the area, the precipitation remained east of the fire and did not provide meaningful relief to the fire area.
Firefighters are facing hot, dry, and windy conditions. Forecasts indicate that winds are expected to increase, with gusts reaching up to 20 mph. These conditions are expected to continue and remain a critical consideration for personnel conducting suppression operations.
Closures and Safety Restrictions
The Manti-La Sal National Forest has issued a temporary closure via Forest Order #04-10-26-02-03 for portions of the Ferron Ranger District. This closure includes Spring City Canyon Road (FS Road 0036) and a portion of FS Road 0014 (Millers Flat).
Additionally, a temporary flight restriction is in effect over the fire area. Authorities have noted that recreational drones entering this restricted zone force aircraft to shut down wildfire air operations to ensure safety.
