The Lung Transplant Program at University of Utah Health reached a historic milestone by performing 50 lung transplants in 2025. This achievement represents the highest number of transplants in the program's history and follows a 38% increase in transplant volume compared to 2024.
Growth through national collaborative
The program's growth was supported by participation in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Lung Transplant Growth Collaborative. This national initiative focuses on increasing access to lung transplantation safely and sustainably by sharing successful strategies and improving operational processes.
Recognition for process improvements
University of Utah Health received special recognition from the IHI for process improvements that led to a record number of patient referrals, evaluations, and placements on the lung transplant wait list. The collaborative provided opportunities to learn from peer institutions across the country to improve care delivery.
Record-breaking monthly transplant totals
Beyond the annual total, the program set several monthly records. In July 2025, the team performed seven lung transplants, the highest monthly total in history. Additionally, the program recorded six transplants in both June and December.
Director emphasizes patient care mission
Matthew Morrell, MD, the medical director of the Lung Transplant Program at University of Utah Health, stated that every transplant represents a second chance at life for a patient. He noted that this milestone reflects the work of the multidisciplinary team and their commitment to expanding care for patients throughout Utah and the Mountain West.
Future goals for expanding access
Looking forward, the program intends to focus on continuing to expand access to lung transplantation and supporting the teams necessary to ensure patients receive life-saving care.
