CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah University football players and coaches stepped away from fall camp on a Wednesday afternoon to participate in a community service project, according to an August 12 report. The team worked to serve the community in conjunction with several local organizations.
The service project was held in partnership with the Cedar City Rotary Club, Miss Iron County contestants, the Cedar City Public Works Department, the Cedar City Police Department, and the Iron County Sheriff's Department. During the afternoon, the Thunderbirds worked to pull weeds, pick up trash, and clean graffiti to improve areas throughout the community.
SUU head coach DeLane Fitzgerald stated that it is fun to give back to a city that has provided significant support to the program. Fitzgerald noted that the players and coaches are a selfless group of individuals who care about the people around them.
Brittany Fisher, the Cedar City Rotary Club Community Service Chair, said the hard work and teamwork of the players and coaches made a lasting impact on the town. She stated that the program is proud to have Thunderbirds who lead both on and off the field.
The activity occurred during the physical demands of fall camp, providing a chance for the team to recharge while performing meaningful work. Wide receiver Anson Kraut said it was a pleasure to help the community and take a break from football.
Defensive lineman Seni Tuiaki mentioned that being able to go the extra mile for the community helps players become more intentional in their roles as SUU football players.
