Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Patriotic Service of America’s Freedom Festival held at the Marriott Center on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah. During his address on June 28, Elder Rasband stated that the Lord preserved the United States for the great unfolding of the gospel.
He described the nation as a promised land and a stepping stone to eternal life, provided people live faithfully. He noted that the land was prepared so that liberty could take hold, allowing agency to thrive and the gospel to branch out with truths to bless millions.
Reflecting on his youth as a Boy Scout, Elder Rasband recalled the importance of taking flag ceremonies seriously. He shared how he learned the role of a patriot through participating in color guards and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Elder Rasband referenced historical figures to illustrate divine guidance in national affairs. He cited Benjamin Franklin, who called for prayer during contentious debates in the Continental Congress, and George Washington, who expressed thanks to the Almighty for the hand that conducts the affairs of men.
He also touched upon scriptural history, mentioning how previous inhabitants of the land, such as the Jaredites and Nephites, experienced cycles of righteousness and wickedness. He noted that while God placed these people in a perfect setting, they failed to sustain the good of others.
Addressing modern challenges, Elder Rasband expressed concern that religious freedom is currently under fire from resistance and cynicism. He questioned who would teach values like honesty, gratitude, and compassion if religion were not present to help shape character.
Attendees at the festival shared similar sentiments regarding the importance of religious liberty. Celeste Galbraith from Orem noted her feeling of being blessed by the freedom to worship, while Tony Nisse from Provo expressed a responsibility to teach his children about the significance of American liberties.
