SALT LAKE CITY — One boy died in a crash early Saturday and two other boys were hospitalized, after the vehicle they were in allegedly fled from police in West Jordan.
Details of the police pursuit
Detective Chris Reyes with the West Jordan Police Department said a South Jordan Police Department officer attempted to make a traffic stop in WJPD's jurisdiction at 1:30 a.m.
“The vehicle that he was attempting to stop fled from him. The officer did shut off his emergency lights and equipment, but the vehicle continued to flee,” Reyes said. “That vehicle was later involved in a motor vehicle accident.”
Description of the collision
Reyes said the vehicle that allegedly fled was a Toyota passenger car carrying three boys who were all minors. The crash happened at the intersection of Mountain View and Old Bingham, where the Toyota crashed into an SUV being driven by a 33-year-old.
Casualties and medical status
One boy who was in the Toyota died in the crash, according to Reyes. The other two boys had severe internal injuries and were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The 33-year-old who was in the SUV had broken bones, severe internal injuries and was taken the hospital in stable but critical condition, Reyes said.
Reason for initial traffic stop
Reyes added that the initial traffic stop was initiated when the SJPD officer said he saw the Toyota recklessly driving and speeding.
The area around the crash was closed to the public as the scene was investigated.
