The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a flash flood warning for central Kane County in southern Utah. Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms were producing heavy rain across the warned area, with rainfall totals between 0.25 and 0.75 inches reported.
The warning identified life-threatening flash flooding as a hazard, noting that flooding of creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses could occur. The National Weather Service stated that flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
Specific locations identified for potential flash flooding included Kodachrome Basin State Park, Paria River, Herm Pollock Slot Canyon, Dunham Slot Canyon, Sheep Creek, Willis Creek, and Bull Valley Gorge.
Officials advised that most flood deaths occur in vehicles and cautioned people to turn around rather than driving through flooded roads. The National Weather Service noted that dry washes, streams, and rivers can become raging currents in a matter of minutes, even from rainfall occurring in distant locations.
