Flu cases are increasing earlier than usual; get vaccinated now to protect yourself from serious illness and hospitalization

SALT LAKE COUNTY— While the severity of the flu season is hard to predict, Salt Lake County Health (SLCoHD) epidemiologists say this year is starting early, with more influenza cases than usual at this point in the season.

“We typically advise people to get their flu vaccine sometime in October,” said Dorothy Adams, SLCoHD executive director. “But with casesalready increasing significantly, the common saying ‘flu before boo’ may be too late; get your flu vaccine now, in early October, rather than waiting, since it can take the body up to two weeks to build the immunity triggered by the vaccine.”

The CDC recommends a flu shot for everyone 6 months and older. Flu vaccine is widely available throughout the community, including at doctor’s offices, area pharmacies and SLCoHD immunization clinics.

SLCoHD offers multiple flu shot formulations, including the nasal mist flu vaccine, high-dose flu shots for adults 65 and older and the new mRNA flu vaccine for people 50 and older. Immunization nurses can advise on the best flu shot for you.

Flu vaccine costs range from $31 to $113 depending on formulation and SLCoHD accepts many health insurance plans.

Appointments are required at SLCoHD immunization clinics, and same-day appointments are often available. To make an appointment, call 385-468-SHOT (7468).
