Spencer Ferguson and Seth Rigtrup each rushed for over 100 yards during a Weber State football home win against Idaho, according to a October 15 report. This achievement marks the first time a Weber State duo has accomplished the feat in four years.
The performance by the two running backs highlights a strategic vision held by coaching staff members Tana Vea and Eric Kjar. Running backs coach Tana Vea stated that the team aims to recruit and win with in-state players, noting that both Ferguson and Rigtrup are Utahns.
During the victory over Idaho, Ferguson totaled 153 yards on 14 carries, while Rigtrup recorded 129 yards on 14 carries. This approach contrasts with some opponents who may rely on a single back for up to 30 carries per game, but Vea noted that splitting time helps maintain player health and production through the end of the season.
The paths for both players to reach this milestone involved significant challenges. Ferguson, a 2021 graduate of Davis High School, previously walked on at Utah Tech before joining Weber State in 2025. He also manages keratoconus, an eye condition that requires specialized, thick contacts to see clearly. Ferguson has recorded 410 yards and six touchdowns over five games this season.
Sophomore Seth Rigtrup joined Weber State after walking on at Snow College, where he was the leading rusher in 2025. Rigtrup previously served a mission in Mexico and had discussions regarding football with Southern Utah and Air Force before arriving at Weber State.
The duo's performance was the first of its kind at Weber State since a 2022 playoff game against North Dakota, when Josh Davis ran for 130 yards and Damon Bankston recorded 122 yards. The coaching staff continues to look toward other players, including freshman Semisi Kinikini and Omar Shah, to contribute to the team's rotation and physical presence.
