Iowa State football traveled to Provo on Friday, Oct. 9, to face BYU in its first Big 12 road test of the season. The matchup took place at LaVell Edwards Stadium and was broadcast on ESPN.
During the game, BYU secured an early 7-0 lead following a 10-play, 75-yard drive that included a touchdown run by Journee Tonga from 6 yards out. Bear Bachmeier contributed to the drive by completing four passes for four completions and picking up a third down with his feet. Iowa State responded with a 40-yard field goal from Kyle Konrardy to make the score 7-3 in favor of BYU. The Cyclones' defense, led by Carson Willich, recorded a five-yard loss on the opening play of a BYU drive, resulting in a three-and-out.
The BYU Cougars entered the contest with a 4-0 record and a top 10 national ranking under head coach Kalani Sitake, who is in his 11th season. The BYU defense has allowed an average of 14.2 points per game this season, holding Arizona and TCU under 20 points. Offensively, the BYU rushing attack is noted as being among the best in the country, led by Bear Bachmeier with four rushing touchdowns and starter L.J. Martin, who has 344 rushing yards and three touchdowns this season.
Iowa State holds a 5-1 all-time advantage in the series against BYU. However, BYU won the most recent matchup in 2025 with a 41-27 score. The last meeting in Provo resulted in a 45-13 victory for Iowa State in 2023, where Abu Sama recorded 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
