BYU secured a victory over Notre Dame in a top 10 showdown, according to a report published October 18. The win propelled the Cougars to the No. 3 spot in the US LBM Coaches Poll, while Notre Dame fell six places to No. 8.
In the game, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Walker Lyons with 1:47 remaining to give the Cougars a 28-24 lead. Although the Fighting Irish reached the BYU four-yard line with four seconds left, a missed touchdown pass prevented a comeback, allowing BYU to hold on for the win.
The US LBM Coaches Poll saw significant changes as five of the top seven ranked teams lost. Miami (Fla.) moved into the No. 1 position following the upsets. Ohio State holds the No. 2 spot after defeating Indiana 19-15, which dropped the Hoosiers to No. 6. Texas Tech rose to No. 5 in the rankings.
The ranking shifts were further influenced by Georgia's 27-24 loss to Auburn, which resulted in the Bulldogs dropping to No. 4. Other notable movements in the top 25 include Mississippi at No. 7, Utah at No. 9, and UCLA at No. 10.
The victory against Notre Dame represents BYU's highest-ranked opponent victory since 1990, when the Cougars defeated No. 1 Miami (Fla.).
The US LBM Coaches Poll rankings for the week include Alabama at No. 13, Iowa at No. 14, and Southern California at No. 15.
