The Garland Public Library is now making Wi-Fi hotspots available for checkout to provide connectivity to community members without internet access. This initiative serves as an extension of the library's work to close the digital divide by offering services beyond the library building.
The portable Wi-Fi hotspots allow users to connect mobile-enabled devices, such as tablets, smartphones, or laptops, to the internet. According to the library, a single hotspot can connect up to ten devices simultaneously in most situations.
Hotspots can be checked out for 14 days at no charge. If a device is not returned on time, internet service is disabled until the item is returned. While hotspots may be renewed, renewals must be completed in person at the Garland Public Library.
To check out a hotspot, borrowers must be at least 18 years old and hold a Bear River Valley Libraries card in good standing. Borrowers must be present to check out the device, show proof of identity, and sign a Wi-Fi Lending Waiver of Liability Agreement.
Late returns result in a charge of $2 per day, up to the total cost of the device. A $100 fee is applied for a lost or damaged hotspot, and a $15 fee is applied for a lost or damaged charger.
Instruction sheets are provided with each device to assist with setup and connectivity. For further assistance or questions, individuals can contact the library at (435) 257-3118 Ext. 1005.
