UCF quarterback Alonza Barnett III reportedly will not start in the upcoming Saturday game against No. 2 BYU, according to a report published October 20. The news, first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday, comes as Barnett continues his recovery from a significant hamstring injury.
Barnett has missed the last four games while recovering from the injury. During that period, backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins has led the Knights to a 2-2 record. Although the team had a bye week to regroup, officials indicated that Barnett's return is not expected for the matchup against BYU.
Coach Scott Frost stated on Monday that Barnett has been making progress in his rehabilitation. Frost noted that while Barnett looks good and is performing many activities, he intends to be cautious about rushing the return to ensure the player is fully ready and does not sustain another injury while facing large defenders.
Offensive coordinator Steve Cooper provided an update on Tuesday, stating that Barnett has been practicing with the team on a limited basis. Cooper noted that Barnett has been getting closer to full readiness and expressed satisfaction with the progress made since the Pitt game. While there is a possibility of a return if practice goes well this week, the final decision remains to be made.
The Knights are scheduled to face No. 2 BYU in Orlando this Saturday.
