Intermountain Health has introduced an upgraded online scheduling system that allows patients to book annual mammogram appointments through a mobile device or computer. In a report published October 20, 2026, medical experts noted that making the process as simple as booking a restaurant reservation could help overcome hurdles to regular screenings.
Eugene Kim, MD, the system chief of breast imaging at Intermountain Health, stated that the goal of the new system is to help women book appointments at times that fit their busy schedules. The online platform allows women to view available appointment times across various nearby facilities rather than calling to check availability. Dr. Kim noted that if a patient's usual hospital has no openings for several weeks, they may find an appointment available the following day at a different hospital. He added that the same radiologist who reviews scans at one facility may also review them at another due to hospital rotations.
Tawnya Bowles, MD, an oncology surgeon and regional senior medical director for oncology at Intermountain Health, said that early detection through annual mammography is vital because it provides more less invasive treatment options. She further noted that the organization has a process in place for same-day biopsies to provide faster results if follow-up care is required. To accommodate busy schedules, select Intermountain Health locations offer mammogram services on Saturdays.
Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lifetime. While October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, medical experts emphasize that cancer is a year-round disease. Utah currently has some of the lowest mammogram rates in the country, and doctors hope the new scheduling system will improve these screening numbers. Dr. Kim encouraged women to pick the next available date that fits their schedule if it has been a while since their last screening.
Intermountain Health is a nonprofit system headquartered in Utah. The organization includes 34 hospitals, approximately 400 clinics, and the Select Health nonprofit health plan, which has more than one million members.
