The Utah Department of Transportation announced that several significant closures at the I-215 and I-80 interchange will impact airport access through September 2.
Airport Access and Detours Required
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) confirmed that starting Tuesday night, the northbound I-215 to westbound I-80 ramp will be closed. This closure is scheduled to remain in effect from July 28 through September 2, 2026. Because this route is a primary path for travelers, officials are urging motorists to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.
To reach Salt Lake City International Airport during this period, drivers should utilize I-15 as an alternate route. UDOT has indicated that a signed detour will be available via the 700 North exit. Motorists can use a continuous U-turn to enter southbound I-215 and subsequently proceed to westbound I-80.
Additional Ramp Closures Announced
In addition to the westbound I-80 closure, UDOT announced two other major ramp closures beginning Tuesday at 8 p.m. The northbound I-215 to eastbound I-80 ramp will also be closed through September 2, 20 6. Furthermore, a longer-term closure will impact the northbound I-215 to Redwood Road ramp, which is expected to remain closed from July 28 through October 2, 2026.
Travelers coming from Redwood Road will also face significant delays. The ramp leading from Redwood Road to northbound I-215 is scheduled to be closed through July 2027. These overlapping closures are part of a larger infrastructure overhaul affecting the western portion of the I-215 loop.
Long-Term Infrastructure Overhaul
The disruptions are part of a massive rehabilitation project on I-215 West, stretching from SR-201 to North Temple. The UDOT project scope includes roadway reconstruction and resurfacing, the rehabilitation of 30 bridges, and the improvement of 14 miles of ramps located on both I-80 and California Avenue. The department also plans to construct a new southbound auxiliary lane extending from 700 North to westbound I-80.
Construction is expected to continue through the summer of 2027. As work progresses, all traffic has already been shifted to newly reconstructed pavement on the west side of I-215. Motorists should prepare for reduced speeds, noise, dust, and vibrations, as well as the presence of heavy equipment and crew members in the construction zone.
Local Street and I-80 Impacts
The project is also causing intermittent impacts on local streets as crews work to rehabilitate bridges. Drivers should expect various restrictions and lane shifts at several key intersections. Specifically, 500 South, Indiana Avenue, California Avenue, and 1700 South are all subject to intermittent traffic restrictions and lane shifts due to ongoing bridge work.
On I-80 itself, motorists can expect nightly lane restrictions on both eastbound and westbound lanes. These restrictions are scheduled to occur each night from 9 p.m. through the early morning hours and are expected to continue through the upcoming week.

For those traveling to Salt Lake City International Airport, the airport remains located six miles west of downtown Salt Lake City. While the I-2\u00215 ramps are undergoing construction, the airport continues to be accessible via Interstate 80 from Exit 115B or via Bangerter Highway.
