Salt Lake City has introduced significant updates to its paid parking system to better serve a growing downtown area. These changes, driven by a 2022 study and constituent feedback, include adjustments to meter rates, enforcement hours, and time limits per parking space.
Effective September 15, 2025, new time limits per space will be implemented following constituent feedback. Drivers are limited to two hours in the same paid metered spot Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, the time limit increases to four hours in the same spot Monday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. to provide more flexibility for evening events and dining.
Earlier changes that went into effect on July 1, 2025, included an increase in the hourly rate at City parking meters from $2.25 to $3.50. Additionally, payment is now required at meters on Saturdays, and metered parking hours were extended until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, whereas they previously ended at 8 p.m.
The City stated these changes are intended to improve parking turnover for shoppers and support local businesses. As Salt Lake City evolves from a commuter city into an event city, the updated regulations help balance the need for quick turnovers during the day with longer stays for evening activities. Revenue from these meters is directed toward City improvements, such as street and sidewalk repairs and bike lanes.
Certain regulations remain unchanged. Sunday parking at City meters remains free, and parking enforcement is not conducted on City holidays. Residential parking permits are also unaffected by these updates. Drivers can continue to pay for parking using the ParkSLC app, nearby pay stations, or via coins, cash, or credit cards at the meter.
