The Utah Historical Society hosted a day-long grand opening event on June 27 that ran from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The celebration included a community ribbon cutting at 9 a.m., followed by the official opening of the museum galleries at 9:15 a.m. To accommodate the anticipated turnout, organizers provided a free shuttle service from downtown Salt Lake City, picking up passengers every 20 minutes at the North Office Building parking lot located at 125 N. State St.

During the festivities, visitors had access to various community partner booths on the north plaza of the Capitol Complex designed for family-friendly activities. The event also featured local food trucks and a covered outdoor seating area, though museum officials noted that eating inside the North Capitol Building was not permitted. To help manage large crowds, staff maintained the ability to briefly limit gallery access if building capacity was reached.

The museum's permanent collection includes the Alice Merrill Horne Collection, which comprises more than 2,000 works ranging from paintings and sculptures to textiles. Additionally, the museum recently acquired the Mormon Meteor III, an iconic land speed racer that will be featured in the Inspiring Utah gallery.

The museum's exhibits are organized into four permanent galleries designed to tell different chapters of the state's narrative. The 'Connecting Utah' gallery focuses on the state's sense of community, character, and thriving culture. Meanwhile, the 'Building Utah' gallery honors the diverse work of Utahns, including industries such as agriculture, mining, railroad construction, and homemaking. The final permanent gallery, 'Inspiring Utah,' highlights the state's distinctive achievements, innovations, and attractions.
Upcoming temporary exhibit announcement
A temporary gallery titled "The Past is Personal" is scheduled to run from Summer 2026 through Spring 2027. This exhibit invites visitors to consider their role in national history as the nation marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Drawing from the Utah Historical Society's semiquincentennial project, 'Peoples of Utah Revisited,' the exhibit utilizes themes of commemoration and community through the lenses of memory and perspective. Former Speaker of the House Brad Wilson noted that the museum allows Utahns to see a connected story about the state's history and the various elements that contributed to its success.
The Museum of Utah is located at 450 N. State Street in Salt Lake City. Regular gallery hours are Monday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The museum will also be open on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Museum Store follows a similar schedule, operating Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., including July 4. Admission to the museum galleries remains free and open to the public.
