Construction is underway on I-215 West from SR-201 to North Temple as part of a major rehabilitation project by the Utah Department of Transportation. According to a project notice, the work includes roadway reconstruction and the rehabilitation of 30 bridges.
The project elements involve roadway reconstruction and resurfacing, as well as improving 14 miles of ramps. The work is expected to continue through summer 2027.
As part of the I-215 and I-80 interchange, several major ramp closures began on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The northbound I-215 to westbound I-80 ramp, the northbound I-215 to eastbound I-80 ramp, and the northbound I-215 to Redwood Road ramp are closed and scheduled to open as early as Friday, August 28. Additionally, the ramp from Redwood Road to northbound I-215 is closed through July 2027.
Other upcoming traffic impacts include the closure of the northbound I-215 California Avenue off-ramp as early as Monday, August 31, for approximately 35 days. The northbound I-215 California Avenue on-ramp is scheduled to close as early as Tuesday, September 8, for approximately 30 days.
Motorists traveling to Salt Lake City International Airport should use I-15 as an alternate route during certain closures. A signed detour route will be available via the 700 North exit.
All traffic has been shifted to newly reconstructed pavement on the west side of I-215 as construction progresses into its next phase. Nightly lane restrictions are expected on I-80 between 9 p.m. and the early morning hours.
Local street traffic impacts include intermittent restrictions and lane shifts at 500 South, Indiana Avenue, 1700 South, and California Avenue due to bridge rehabilitation work.
The Utah Department of Transportation notes that construction schedules and traffic impacts are subject to change due to weather conditions and material availability. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
