The Skyridge High School girls tennis team secured a second-place finish in the annual Utah Valley Ashton Invitational. The tournament, which took place Aug. 14 and 15, was played at various schools throughout north Utah County. Lone Peak won the event by defeating the Falcons 4-3 in the final.
Coach Michael Sperry stated that the team performed well under significant stress and pressure. He noted that after a rain delay on Friday, the team had to play three matches on Saturday, showing focus and fight. Sperry expressed pride in the performance and mental toughness displayed by the players.
Skyridge began the tournament with a sweep against Orem on Friday. The team subsequently defeated Woods Cross and Deer Creek on Saturday to advance to the title contest.
In the final, Lone Peak secured victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots against Skyridge seniors Addi Uffens and Libby Ludlow. In third singles, sophomore Maezie Oswald won 6-4, 7-5, while sophomore Kate Jarvie lost 5-7, 4-6 in the No. 4 singles slot.
In doubles play, Lone Peak won the No. 3 match against junior Maggie Ball and freshman Maiana Vakapuna with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 10-8. Skyridge saw victories in first doubles, where Molly Jarvie and Kiri Sperry won 7-5, 6-4, and in second doubles, where Anabelle Rowley and Chloe Barker won 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 10-7.
