Springville High School's esports program provides a competitive gaming outlet for students to practice sportsmanship and compete against other schools in tournaments. The program is led by advisor and coach Branden Russell, who also teaches history and aviation drone technology.
The esports initiative features family-friendly games including Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Rocket League, and Street Fighter. Through these games, students can develop life skills such as teamwork, communication, social skills, and time management.
Springville High School hosted esports in 2020 with titles including Smash, League of Legends, and Rocket League. Following a hiatus, the program has entered its third year and received extra funding and opportunities through a partnership with Ken Garff. A significant milestone for the program was a top-three finish at the state tournament in Street Fighter.
Interested students can participate in meetups and sign-ups in room B-207 from 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.
