The Bear River Health Department issued advisories in late June regarding the risks of West Nile virus and rabies, warning residents to take preventative measures against mosquito bites and animal encounters as seasonal mosquito activity increases across the region.
In a June 30 announcement, the Bear River Health Department, working in conjunction with the Cache and Box Elder Mosquito Abatement districts, advised residents to remain vigilant regarding recent developments involving West Nile virus. The health department noted that mosquito traps were expected to test positive for the virus in the days and weeks following the announcement.
Because mosquitoes are capable of traveling several miles, officials stated that everyone in the region should take precautions against bites regardless of their specific location. The department emphasized that because of this mobility, no area is entirely exempt from potential exposure.
To minimize the risk of contracting West Nile virus, the Bear River Health Department recommended several specific protective actions. Residents were encouraged to use EPA-registered insect repellents containing ingredients such as DEET, permethrin, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, ensuring they follow all package directions for application.
Other recommended precautions include wearing protective clothing—such as long-sleeled shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes—to minimize exposed skin when outdoors. The department also advised individuals to avoid peak mosquito activity periods, noting that mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus are most active during dawn and dusk.
The health department further advised residents to manage their environments to reduce mosquito breeding. This includes regularly emptying, covering, or treating containers that can collect standing water, such as bird baths, flower pots, buckets, and roof gutters.
Additionally, officials recommended maintaining screened areas in homes by keeping doors and windows closed or properly screened to prevent mosquitoes from entering living spaces. Residents were also urged to monitor their health for symptoms including high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, severe headache, or disorientation, and to contact a healthcare provider if these symptoms develop.
In addition to mosquito-borne illness concerns, the Bear River Health Department released information on June 29 regarding rabies prevention. The department described rabies as a preventable viral disease that infects the central nervous system of mammals, which can ultimately lead to brain disease and death.
While any mammal is susceptible to the virus, the department noted that the vast majority of rabies cases reported annually to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) occur in wild animals, specifically including foxes, skunks, raccoons, and bats.
To protect pets from rabies, the health department advised owners to visit veterinarians regularly and ensure that vaccinations for dogs, cats, and ferrets remain up-to-date. Other recommended pet safety measures include keeping dogs under direct supervision and keeping cats and ferrets indoors.
Officials also suggested that pet owners spay or neuter their animals to help reduce the population of unwanted pets that may lack regular vaccinations or proper care. Furthermore, the department advised residents to contact animal control to remove any stray animals from neighborhoods, as these animals may be ill or unvaccinated.
For human prevention of rabies, the Bear River Health Department instructed people to leave all wildlife alone. The department highlighted that contact with infected bats is the leading cause of rabies deaths among people in the United States, followed by exposure to rabid dogs encountered during international travel.
In the event of an encounter, officials recommended immediately washing animal bites or scratches with soap and water. The department emphasized that rabies in humans is 100% preventable through prompt and appropriate medical care, and urged anyone who is bitten, scratched, or uncertain about exposure to consult a healthcare provider regarding postexposure prophylaxis.
