The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation announced June 4, 2026, that construction is complete on the North Wash boat ramp, restoring critical takeout access for Cataract Canyon river users.
Project details and construction features
The project, a collaborative effort involving the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the Public Lands Policy Coordination Office, features a reinforced surface of articulating concrete block mats. These mats were installed to improve traction and durability on the site's steep terrain.
Importance of reliable river access
Jason Curry, director of the Division of Outdoor Recreation, said that reliable river access is critical for guides, outfitters, and the tourism economies connected to Cataract Canyon. He noted the project serves as a way to adapt to changing conditions at Lake Powell.
Addressing declining Lake Powell water levels
The North Wash site is the primary takeout for multi-day river trips, but declining water levels at Lake Powell had recently made the traditional ramp increasingly difficult and unsafe to use. This new ramp serves as an interim solution while a long-term ramp project at North Hite is completed.
Vehicle requirements and safety recommendations
Due to the extremely steep grade, the 16-foot-wide ramp is designed for high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles only. Officials advised users to use 4WD when removing watercraft and recommended that only one vehicle and trailer use the ramp at a time. The Division of Outdoor Recreation also noted that backing a trailer into the water is not advised.
Current limitations and alternative locations
While the improvements provide better conditions, the access area is a benched surface near the water's edge and does not extend into the water at current levels. Users may still utilize alternative takeout locations such as Halls Crossing or Bullfrog.
