Re: 2026 Pioneer Day Fireworks Restrictions
Dear Kaysville City Residents,
As we approach the Pioneer Day holiday, the Kaysville Fire Department and City Administration remain deeply committed to the safety and well-being of our community. This year's continued extreme wildfire conditions across Utah have kept Governor Spencer J. Cox's statewide guidance on personal fireworks use in place, while wisely empowering local governments to designate safe areas and restricted zones in consultation with fire officials.
We have carefully reviewed these conditions, the Governor's guidance, and the specific fire hazards in our city, particularly the brush, grass, and tree-covered areas that pose elevated risks. Our approach is not an all-out ban on personal fireworks within city limits. Instead, it represents a thoughtful, balanced compromise that allows celebration in lower-risk areas while prohibiting use in high-hazard zones.
The updated restrictions are:
• A complete ban on ALL fireworks within the areas highlighted in red on the updated restricted-use map.
• Open discharge of any legal, state-approved fireworks, including aerial fireworks such as aerial repeaters ("cakes") and other aerial devices, in all areas not marked as a restricted zone.
Why This Approach?
• Public Safety First: Fireworks are a leading cause of wildfires, especially under current dry, windy, and high-risk conditions. Our restrictions directly address the most vulnerable parts of Kaysville to prevent potentially devastating fires that could threaten homes, property, and lives.
• Consideration of State Guidance: We fully incorporated the Governor's guidance and statewide concerns into our local plan, while exercising our authority to tailor restrictions to Kaysville's unique geography and risks. Rather than a citywide ban on aerial fireworks, we are enforcing a stricter, expanded restricted-use area map so families can enjoy aerial and ground fireworks alike outside of our highest-risk zones.
• Minimal Inconvenience with Maximum Protection: Much of the city remains available for legal fireworks use, aerials included, during permitted dates and times (July 22-25, with hours extending to midnight on July 24, subject to state and local rules). The restrictions apply only to areas with the highest fire danger, as reflected on the attached map. This strikes a responsible balance between community traditions and necessary caution.
• Enforcement and Support: The Fire Department, along with the Kaysville Police Department, will actively monitor compliance, and we encourage everyone to follow all safety guidelines, including having water sources ready, supervising children, and using only legal consumer fireworks.
We recognize there are still hazardous areas within the approved area and encourage everyone to use extreme caution and avoid using fireworks near fields and brush. In approved areas, people using fireworks are civilly liable for any damage caused by their use. In restricted areas, users are not only liable for damages but also risk criminal charges.
We take wildfire prevention extremely seriously-this is not about limiting enjoyment but about protecting what matters most: our residents, first responders, and the beautiful community we all call home. Public fireworks displays authorized by Kaysville City and approved by the Fire Chief remain unaffected and offer a safe alternative for large-scale celebrations.
