President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicated the Montpelier Idaho Temple on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026. The event marked the eighth completed temple in the state of Idaho.
Church members gathered on Oct. 18 inside the temple and surrounding meetinghouses to participate in the milestone within the Bear Lake Valley. Stake President Steven Hammond of the Montpelier Stake noted that the occasion reflects the legacy of early pioneers who settled the area and provides spiritual opportunities for future generations. Hammond stated that for many local families, the temple serves as a testament to an enduring legacy and a symbol of blessings that ancestors hoped future generations would enjoy.
President Kenny Petersen of the Montpelier South Stake expressed appreciation for the generations that helped prepare the way for the temple. Petersen said the communities surrounding the Bear Lake Valley have been preparing for this since Charles C. Rich and others first settled the region. He noted that the sacrifices made through generations led to this moment and expressed excitement regarding how regular temple attendance could influence area families and communities by providing opportunities to make and keep important covenants.
The new temple provides a significant change for local members who previously had to travel to temples in Logan or Pocatello for worship. Such trips required several hours of travel and planning, particularly during winter months when navigating mountain passes and challenging road conditions. Hammond described the reduction of these travel challenges as truly life-changing.
Hammond emphasized that the temple stands as a message of faith that may resonate with people of all religious affiliations. He expressed hope that those who are not members of the faith will view the temple as a symbol of hope, service, family, and the enduring values of the region. Petersen added that the Montpelier Temple will help turn hearts toward God, which he believes will bless the lives of everyone in the area.
