Utah leaders have officially kicked off a yearlong celebration leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States. Governor Spencer Cox, Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, and members of the Utah Legislature have invited residents to mark the upcoming July 2026 milestone with a series of commemorative programs and community activities.
Walk250 Challenge details
A key component of the state's initiative is the Walk250 Challenge, which encourages Utahns to explore the state's trails. The challenge calls on participants to complete 250 miles of movement across Utah's 29 counties. Those who finish and register their mileage may be eligible for special recognition ceremonies and opportunities to win prizes.
Historical exhibits at State Capitol
In addition to physical challenges, historical education remains a focus. The exhibit titled The Pen Is Mightier: Writing a Revolution is currently on display at the Utah State Capitol. The exhibition highlights communications from colonists during the Revolutionary era and covers Utah's history as it relates to 1776. The exhibit features items such as rare books from the J. Willard Marriott Library’s Rare Books Department.
Local community tribute preparations
Local communities throughout the state are also preparing their own tributes. In Southern Utah, red, white, and blue banners are appearing in anticipation of summer celebrations. Santa Clara has hosted lectures regarding the Civil War, including a presentation on Abraham Lincoln by Utah Tech University Professor Vince Brown. Meanwhile, in Sandy, leaders are inviting residents to participate in citywide activity challenges.
Commemorative products and upcoming events
Other notable preparations include the introduction of a new America 250 license plate featuring a deep blue background and the 1776 American flag. Additionally, Swire Coca-Cola has begun production on limited-edition America250 bottles in West Valley City. As the nation approaches its semiquincentennial, Utah continues to coordinate various local events ranging from parades and concerts to community potlucks.
