The Salt Lake City Airport Board serves as an advisory body to Mayor Erin Mendenhall regarding the management and operation of airports owned by the Salt Lake City Corporation. According to information on the city's website, the board works to adopt methods in the public interest to advance and promote air transportation.
In addition to advising the Mayor, the board oversees various aspects of airport business, including planning, construction, and expansion projects.
The board's duties include making recommendations to the Mayor on several fronts. These responsibilities involve establishing rules and regulations for the conduct of the board and its members, as well as for the airport itself. The board also recommends the appointment or removal of the Director of Airport, Deputy Director, and project managers hired by the City.
Furthermore, the board is tasked with planning, establishing, and approving the construction and expansion of the airport. Members are also responsible for preparing the annual budget and revenue, reviewing airport income and expenses, and assisting the Director of Airports in the orderly development and promotion of the airport.
The board consists of nine public members, each appointed by the Mayor to a four-year term. Per ordinance, members must be at least 21 years old, residents of the State of Utah, and not actively engaged or employed in commercial aeronautics. Additionally, no more than three members may reside outside of Salt Lake City boundaries.
While the board traditionally meets on the second Wednesday of the month, no meetings are scheduled for July or December. The board holds its meetings in the Airport Board Room at the Salt Lake City International Airport.
There are currently no vacancies on the Airport Advisory Board. Interested individuals may submit an application online, though only applications submitted up to one year prior to a vacancy date are considered. The Mayor's office contacts applicants only when considering them for specific appointments.
