The Orem girls volleyball team secured the Class 4A state championship on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, overcoming a Green Canyon comeback to win a five-set thriller at the UCCU Center. The Tigers defeated the Wolves 25-22, 25-20, 25-27, 21-25, and 15-8 to claim the title.
Redemption for the Tigers
The victory served as a moment of redemption for the Orem Tigers, who lost their championship match last year to Desert Hills. This season, the Tigers have been a dominant force, having lost only three games throughout the year. Their previous losses were to Corner Canyon and Skyridge, both 6A programs, and to Green Canyon.
A Five-Set Battle
The championship match required five sets to determine a winner. Orem took an early lead, winning the first two sets 25-22 and 25-20. However, Green Canyon launched a comeback, winning the third and fourth sets 25-27 and 25-21 to force a decisive fifth set.
Orem Secures the Title
In the final set, Orem managed to steady themselves to secure a 15-8 victory. During the tense moments of the fifth set, senior players Haven Michaelis and Eve Allred were noted for their composure. Freshman Meilani Akana delivered a standout performance, recording 25 kills to help lead the Tigers to the title.
Focusing on the Response
Orem head coach Bill Sefita emphasized the importance of mental focus during the match. Following the victory, Sefita noted that the team's message was to focus on how to respond and the effort brought into the fifth set, rather than dwelling on the past.
Key Player Contributions
The match featured several key players from both sides. Orem's contributions included plays from Meilani Akana, Haven Michaelis, Eve Allred, Callie Eudis, Madi Scott, Amelia Marshall, and Moana Havea. Green Canyon's efforts included contributions from players such as Chloe Christiansen, Avery Fauth, Izzy Christensen, Brynn Spackman, Audrey White, and Charly Monson.
