Orem City Council members are currently evaluating two different versions of a short term rental ordinance. According to Mayor McCandless, the city attorney's office was asked to develop options that either allow or do not allow non-owner-occupied short term rentals.
Evaluating short term rental options
While some council members feel comfortable with owner-occupied rentals and others do not, the Mayor stated that the council is working toward a compromise to preserve neighborhood integrity and ensure thriving neighborhoods.
New initiative for resident engagement
During Oremfest, the city introduced a new section called All Things Orem. This initiative featured a dedicated booth designed to make the Mayor and council members more accessible to residents for questions and interaction.
Strengthening regional municipal partnerships
In terms of regional collaboration, Orem recently held its first joint City Council meeting with Lindon during the current mayoral term. Discussions between the two cities focused on water, trails, canals, and relationships with emergency services. The Mayor noted ongoing efforts to build partnerships with Vineyard, Provo, Timpanogos School District, and Lindon, including an upcoming meeting with the school district in August.
Honoring Gold Star families
The Mayor also reflected on a powerful experience at a dedication ceremony for the Gold Star Memorial. Observing Gold Star families honoring deceased loved ones by placing photos and roses was described as an emotional and impactful moment.
Supporting local community activities
Additionally, the Mayor highlighted community activities such as volunteering at the bike valet for the weekly farmers market, which features over 200 booths.
Commitment to direct community engagement
Reflecting on recent leadership lessons, Mayor McCandless emphasized the importance of being present and engaging directly with the community. The Mayor expressed a commitment to showing up at local events to interact with Orem residents.
