The Box Elder County Commission voted Wednesday to adopt a temporary 180-day land use regulation that suspends the processing of new applications for data centers and associated power plants within unincorporated areas of the county.
Details of the new ordinance
The ordinance, identified as Ordinance No. 654, establishes a planning period for county officials to research and $–$ develop updates to the Box Elder County Land Use Management & Development Code. According to a press release from Box Elder County, the regulation aims to address the infrastructure requirements and impacts of technology projects, including potential reviews of zoning classifications and development standards.
Purpose of the temporary pause
County leaders stated the temporary pause will allow for public participation and policy development before long-term decisions are made. The county noted that this regulation does not affect the Stratos Project, as that project is located within an area governed by the Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA).
Springdale municipal budget and zoning updates
Other Utah municipalities are also preparing for upcoming fiscal and zoning reviews. The Springdale Town Council has scheduled a public hearing for June 10, 2026, to review the FY2026-2027 municipal budget and discuss proposed compensation increases for executive municipal officers. The council will also consider a zone change application for 975 Zion Park Blvd.
Clinton City Council special meeting details
In Clinton, the City Council will hold a special meeting on June 16, 2026, to receive public comment on the proposed final budget for Fiscal Year 2026-2027, which includes budgets for the Redevelopment Agency and the Sanitary Sewer Special Service District.
