Quarterback Bear Bachmeier and defensive end Tausili Akana have been named Big 12 players of the week, according to a September 14 report.
Bachmeier was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, while Akana received honors as the conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Bachmeier, a sophomore from Murrieta, California, contributed to No. 11 BYU's 28-17 victory over Arizona on Saturday. He completed 16 of 26 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Bachmeier also recorded 37 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, accounting for all four of the team's touchdowns.
With the win, Bachmeier became the fourth player in Big 12 history to start a season with two consecutive games featuring at least three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He currently co-leads the Big 12 with eight total touchdowns through two games, consisting of six passing and two rushing scores.
Akana, a junior from Laie, Hawaii, recorded four tackles and 2.5 sacks during the win over Arizona. His second sack of the game occurred with under six minutes remaining, pinning the Arizona quarterback inside the 20-yard line. He and teammate Keanu Tanuvasa subsequently sacked the Arizona quarterback again, forcing a punt and helping seal the victory.
BYU was scheduled to travel to Fort Collins, Colorado, to play Colorado State on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Canvas Stadium.
