The Uintah School Board was scheduled to meet on Monday, Sept. 21, at 5 p.m. to decide whether to begin the legal process for considering the closure of Uintah Middle School after the 2026-2027 school year, according to a September 19 statement.
This meeting was intended to determine if the board would approve a motion to launch a 90-day study and public input period required by state law. A final decision regarding the school would not be made at that meeting.
If the board approved the motion on Monday, Sept. 21, district staff would conduct a feasibility study during the 90-day period. This study would examine moving 7th and 8th graders from Uintah Middle School to Vernal Middle School next school year and moving 6th graders back to elementary schools.
The reorganization is being considered due to declining enrollment and projected continued enrollment losses over the next decade, which the district noted is a national trend.
The special business meeting was scheduled to take place in the boardroom at the Uintah School District Office, located at 826 S. 1500 East, Naples. The meeting was open to the public and included a Zoom option for online attendance.
Under state law, a final decision regarding the future of Uintah Middle School cannot be made until December, following the completion of the mandatory 90-day study and public input process.
