The Salt Lake City Council remains opposed to the proposed ICE mega detention facility. Without the information needed to fully evaluate its negative impacts, the City has determined that legal action is necessary to ensure compliance with applicable federal laws, administrative procedures, and intergovernmental coordination requirements.
Efforts to Engage DHS
For months, the City has made every effort to engage in good faith with the Department of Homeland Security. Throughout this process, the City sought necessary information to understand and address impacts on our communities, local infrastructure, water resources during the severe drought, and the environment.
Council Chair Statement
“We are appreciative of Mayor Mendenhall and the County for moving ahead with the lawsuit and safeguarding our communities,” Council Chair Alejandro Puy emphasized. “The impact of this facility poses far too great a threat to our essential water supply, critical infrastructure, and core societal values.”
