The Big West has announced that Utah Valley University (UVU) will join the conference as a full member beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. The addition is intended to strengthen the conference's commitment to athletic and academic excellence while expanding its competitive reach.
Conference expansion details
This move marks a return to the Beehive State for The Big West, which has not had a member in Utah since Utah State was part of the conference from 1978 to 2005. With the addition of UVU and the previous addition of California Baptist University, The Big West will consist of an 11-team conference for the 2026-27 season.
UVU sports and transition
Located in Orem, Utah, UVU sponsors 16 NCAA Division I sports. Transitioning from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), the Wolverines will compete in several sports including baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's outdoor track & field, and women's volleyball.
Enrollment and university impact
Upon arrival, Utah Valley University will also have the largest enrollment in The Big West. UVU President Dr. Astrid S. Tuminez stated that the move marks an important milestone for the university's 47,000 students, 125,000 alumni, and nearly 400 student-athletes.

Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly said that UVU brings a tradition of competitive excellence and a rapidly growing athletic program that aligns with the vision for the future. He noted that the addition expands the geographic footprint into a significant region.

Pradeep K. Khosla, UC San Diego Chancellor and Chair of The Big West Board of Directors, described the announcement as a great day in the history of The Big West.
Athletic Director's future outlook
UVU Athletic Director Dr. Jared Sumsion expressed excitement about taking on the new challenge and noted the conference's history of success at the highest levels of Division I competition. The Wolverines are scheduled to officially begin Big West competition on July 1, 2026.
