Southern Utah University's Department of Music recently celebrated the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Music Center. The celebration included grand opening concerts held on September 24 and September 25.
The SUU Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The department offers several bachelor's degrees, including Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in Commercial Music, Bachelor of Music in Music Education with secondary choral and secondary instrumental emphases, Bachelor of Music in Performance with instrumental and vocal emphases, and a minor in music. Master's degree offerings include a Master of Music Education and a Master of Music in Music Technology.
Various ensembles are available for audition and enrollment to all students regardless of their field of study. These groups include Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz One and Jazz Two, Sound of Southern Utah athletic bands, Opus chamber vocal ensemble, Concert Choir, Luminosa treble choir, Opera and Musical Theater, Commercial Music Ensembles, Percussion Ensemble, and other instrumental chamber ensembles such as brass and strings.
The department provides several ways for students to engage with music through scholarships and auditions. Support is available for the Hal and Joan Campbell Scholarship, which assists students dedicated to the music industry. Interest forms and audition information are provided for wind, string, and choral ensembles, as well as music scholarship and entrance auditions.
Several upcoming events are scheduled at the Eccles Music Center. A SUU Wind Symphony concert featuring David Torres as a trumpet soloist is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30. Other upcoming performances include Magic In Motion with the Orchestra of Southern Utah on Thursday, October 1; a piano guest artist recital by Jie and Ning Lu on Wednesday, October 7; and a jazz event on Friday, October 9.
